History
“Asturias (Leyenda)” is one of Isaac Albéniz’s most famous works, although, paradoxically, it was not originally written for guitar, but for piano. The piece first appeared as the Preludio of the Suite Española, Op. 47, published by the Hofmeister firm around 1901. However, scholars agree that Albéniz did not conceive the suite in the form we know today: many movements were grouped, retitled, or rearranged by editors after his death in 1909.
The music of “Asturias” displays strong influences of Andalusian flamenco, especially toque por bulerías and cante jondo, with its characteristic alternation between the Phrygian mode and driving rhythmic patterns. For this reason, several musicologists —including Gilbert Chase and Walter Aaron Clark— highlight the geographical inconsistency of the title: the musical character bears no relation to traditional Asturian music, but is closely connected to the musical language of southern Spain. The title “Asturias” was most likely an editorial decision added later to reinforce the idea of a Spanish suite representing different regions.
The piece achieved worldwide fame thanks to the guitar transcription, especially the one attributed to Francisco Tárrega in the late 19th or early 20th century (the exact date remains uncertain due to its manuscript transmission). This adaptation turned the piece into an essential classic of the guitar repertoire, to the point that many today believe Albéniz originally composed it for the instrument.
“Asturias (Leyenda)” is performed around the world as a virtuosic, intense, and deeply Spanish work. Its combination of rhythmic energy, lyricism, and flamenco color has made it one of the most iconic pieces of the Spanish classical repertoire.
